Some prints make you catch your breath, they have so much potential. They lift your spirits and fill your head with more ideas for patterns and sewing projects than you can shake a measuring stick at! And before you can say “When is the next series of Great British Sewing Bee” they have you reaching for the scissors and tailors chalk….. Lotta Jansdotters Glimma collection is definitely one of these.

The sprigs and their cloudberry colour berries, the kite strings and tails, the clean lines and cool colours simply shout out to be made into something you’ll love.

When the weather turned sunny – something that just don’t happen enough in these cold clines - I needed a cool top. Pulling the sun-top out of the cupboard, where it’s lived for several years, it had definitely seen better days. So tape measure in hand, I set about drafting a DIY pattern from the old top, making a few minor alterations. The original top is made from a stretch T-shirt material, so the new pattern needed to be adapted for a non-stretch cloth.

The result is the DIY Hayle-Beach Top made out of two prints from Lotta Jansdotter’s gorgeous Glimma collection….

(Named after one of the places I love most – Hayle Beach in Cornwall, miles of sandy beach, surfing, and space to fly kites too!)

How the Hayle Beach Top differs from the original top….

Kite Tail shaped ties - Lotta’s lovely Kitta print inspired the kite tail shaped ties which widen at the ends. I can see me using this idea on the next Kitta sun-top too!

Contrasting yoke - The yoke section is made from Marby (Mineral Dust) it complements Kitta perfectly.

The top is sized small to medium (UK 10-14), and needed just 0.5 metre Kitta print for the front and back sections, and just a small piece of Marby for the yoke. The ties and yoke facing were made from 25cm x 110cm plain white cotton.

I really love this little top, it’s certainly going to be packed in my ruck-sack when I go on hols – just hoping the weather holds too !
